Hello golfers,
The temperature is climbing higher as we get closer to the start of the season. I am beginning to see faces that I haven't seen since October, and none of them looked anything like Pumpkins or Zombies. The course is playing great at the moment and is the driest in town, with green surfaces like that of many courses in summer. We have had many members from our surrounding competitors paying to play East Kilbride of late due to our increasing reputation of being the best condition course in the area. These were the words of a party of players from Hamilton Golf Course last week, and this was really great to hear. We are trying so hard to produce a great golfing experience for you all and something that other clubs will be envious of, and we are definitely moving in the right direction.
Trains, Pros And Lost Luggage
It's a title that no doubt will grab your attention, and something which gave me a little heart attack on Friday.
One of my old friends from Dubai was due over on business from Dubai Creek Golf Club, and myself and my friend Kenny (Golf Professional @ Linlithgow GC) made arrangements to meet up with him in Edinburgh. Being big boys now, we thought we could travel on a big train through to the capital to meet him. So after numerous messages, myself and Kenny agreed to meet on the Train through to Edinburgh. I, being from the Southside of Glasgow, had never heard of Airdrie, or even been on a train that went anywhere near Airdrie. Nor did I have any idea that Queen Street Station had a lower level. When confronted with the lower level platform, I genuinely thought I was now at one with Harry Potter and awaited my train to Hogwarts via Airdrie.
To cut a long story short, Kenny missed the Train, I got off the next stop to let him catch up, I then realised I had left all my worldly belongings on the train. All apart from one packet of fresh mango, 4 cans of premium Belgium lager and a half eaten Whispa.
Kenny assured me that if anyone caught me with a mango in Airdrie, I could well be in trouble, so we jumped on another train into the capital. After providing 4 types of ID and a specimen, I was once again reunited with my bag and I could at last have a beer.
Lesson learned - Don't change trains in Airdrie, and never tell anyone you're carrying mangos.
Bunkers? What Bunkers...
For many years we have had badly positioned bunkers on the practice area that have not been conducive to great practice. Brian and his greens team have taken a JCB to them and flattened them. This has opened up the practice area in preparation for our wonderful yardage markers.
Please be patient as I try and figure out the exact position of the markers and how best to arrange the play on the area. I think we will all agree that the way it has been set up in previous years has not allowed proper practice to take place. We will get there!
Be Part Of The Club
I fondly remember becoming a member of Cathcart Castle Golf Club at the ripe old age of 11 and boy was I excited. Back then XBox's were to hold your eggs, and golf clubs were our youth clubs. I spent more time at the club than in my house, and for me it was all about belonging and being part of the bricks. I still remember being treated to a logo'd golf ball and marker from the pro shop, and believe it or not I still have the Orange Penfold Ace somewhere.
Why were these so special to me?
Well, because they were embossed by the club crest of the place where I was so excited to be part of.
Being part of a golf club is not just about playing the course but about identifying yourself as part of it. You don't have to get an East Kilbride Tattoo, but I'm sure a few may already have one. It's just nice to have a little reminder of the club with you when playing the course or playing elsewhere. It helps you know that you are part of great club with great traditions and great fellow members.
We don't do tattoos, YET, but we do have a great range of club crested items in the shop and here are some pictures of what we have to offer, not forgetting some early season deals.
Bag Trade In The bag trade in will be coming to an end, so if you do fancy treating yourself to a more reliable club carrying device, then please do drop by.
We have been giving the last rights to a lot of bags that have been older, uglier and more useless than me. Hard to believe but true. So pop in for a gander.

What Golf Ball Should You Use?It's a question that I am sure you have all asked yourself at one time or another. The common answer I get is,
"Whichever one I find in my bag first". This is unfortunately not going to win you any medals or get that handicap down. Now please don't think that you need to buy the most expensive balls, because honestly you do not.
Most people are playing with wrong ball, and this will make a huge difference to you distance, spin and feel when playing golf. Most people struggle to compress top end balls and would be better off with a cheaper, softer ball. It is only a small percentage who should be looking at using the top tour level balls.
You should also stick to the one type of ball, as using different ones will. yes you've guessed it, deliver different results. If there was one type of ball that worked for very singe person then the best players would use the same ball, but clearly they don't! Jason Day, Rory and Speith all use different balls!!
