Greetings Fellow Sun Worshipers,
The smell of coconut has been wafting all over the G74 postcode this week as we all reached for the Hawaiian Tropic.
The sun has finally come from behind the clouds and the rain has been replaced with rays of orange.
The winter wardrobe has been hoisted upstairs to the attic and men all over the country have been asking themselves the question...
"To Speedo or not to Speedo"
I would thoroughly recommend no Speedo trunks to be worn, and especially not at the Golf Club. Isn't it amazing that the mercury only has to pop it's little head above the 10 degree line and its "TAAPS AFF". For my non-Scottish readers, that means "TOPS OFF".
It is a strange and wonderful phenomenon when the Native Scotsman decides that it is so warm, they discard their clothes from above the waist and go to the local newsagent to buy a glass bottle of Irn Bru.
They then walk with a gentle swagger around the streets, and even in their infinite wisdom decide to lie down on grass verges to "TAAP UP THEIR TAN".
These patterns of human behaviour were no doubt one of the reasons why Glasgow was awarded city of culture in 1990 and the Commonwealth Games in 2014.
More Golf For The Pro
On Friday night myself and my young apprentice ventured out onto the hallowed turf of EKGC. It was a lovely night and the golf wasn't too bad at all. A couple of birdies, a few pars and a couple of bogeys made the evening ok as the match finished all square.
I definitely am a little rusty in certain areas, most behind trees but I will get there.
Just like you all, I need practice and have to accept that sometimes my balls don't fly straight all the time. I am human after all.
Ground Control... This is Golf Pro Bell
If I were to write a book on golf and how to get better quicker, the first chapter would be named "Ground Control".
This is without doubt the most important part of golf and the aspect that I help golfers the most with. It basically means the players ability to control where the golf club hits the ground. If a golfer can strike the ground where the ball is time and time again, then that golfer will be able to strike the golf ball well. Without this, the golfer will never be consistent and never get any better. They may spend time improving posture, grip and swing mechanics, but without the ability to control the low point then he or she is wasting their time. This sounds harsh, but it is what I see time after time after time. So forget about everything else until you do this.
If you need help with your game, whether that's with a lesson or fitting, click here to get in touch, or come and have a chat with us in the pro shop.
Junior Team Sponsor
I am delighted to announce that Allan Kennedy has sponsored the East Kilbride Junior Team this year and kitted them out in style this year.
All the juniors are thrilled, and a big thank you to Allan and all he does for the Juniors and the club.
Junior Flag Competition
This Sunday East Kilbride Golf Club will be hosting part of the "Junior Flag Series". This series of competitions introduces junior golfers to competition play in a gentle and confidence inspiring way.
They all are given 36 shots to see how far they can get round the course. The course is made shorter for them and all holes would be about 150 yards long maximum. Where their ball comes to rest after 36 shots, there they put their flag in the ground. We will be hosting around 50 juniors on Sunday afternoon, and I know you will all make them feel very welcome.
Juniors are the lifeblood of every golf club and of the sport of golf. We need competitions like this to show these Juniors and their families that East Kilbride Golf Club is where they should be members, and where they should support. I am also looking for any volunteers who would like to assist on Sunday afternoon with a few things, so please get in touch if you would like to help.

Professionals Day 2016
Last year was my first Professionals Day at East Kilbride Golf Club and it was an absolute hoot!
This year's format will be teams of 2 players in a better ball format. It was hugely popular and there were prizes galore for everyone.
There will be fun on and off the golf course, and the coveted "Professionals Day Trophy" will be up for grabs.
Food and drink will also be supplied on the course, and all for only £10 per player, so £20 for your team of two.
The competition will take place on Saturday, 18 June and will go live on BRS on the 23rd May.
Again we will be offering a limited number of Sponsored Tee Times where you can reserve your desired tee off time now. As I say these are limited and when they are gone, they are gone, so reserve yours now.
These sponsored times are £65 for 4 players. There are also lots of other sponsorship opportunities for the day, and the lead up to the competition, so if you would like to get involved then please just drop me a line or click here to get in touch.
Mixed Fortunes For The Gents And Junior Teams
Last week we saw both the Gents and Junior Teams do battle in their respective leagues.
The gents romped home to a 7-3 victory against Colville Park Golf Club.
The Juniors were unfortunately beaten by Torrance House Golf Club in the new match format. This new format involves the Juniors giving or receiving strokes depending on the handicap of each player.
To be honest I am not a big fan of these changes as I believe we need to encourage players to strive to be better players in their younger years, and not for them to protect their handicaps so they can compete against lower players. I grew up playing golf against better players and striving to beat them off of bare feet, and without this quest to win, I really don't know if I would have arrived where I am today. I hope that I am wrong, but nevertheless our Juniors need our support to grow, and as a club we are doing all we can.
