Slow Play I really cannot believe how long players are taking in the Saturday Medals and don’t worry I know that the vast majority of you are not at fault for slow play but you will witness it. Players are witnessing it and not educating the slow players about the importance of playing ready golf etc. The problems are starting between 9am and 10am, this is where we begin to have a 10 minute hold up on the tee. From 10-12pm we then lose another time. I have been out on the first tee trying to figure out what is happening. I watched a group tee off and hit their tee shots way before the bunker and in the rough, they then waited for the green to clear and then hit their shots nowhere near the distance to get there. Now I realise that that safety is a must but there was no chance on earth of them getting there. This made the tee back up. I think you all need to be aware of how far you actually hit the ball, so you see if you could land a ball on a green for your second shot. Most people think they hit a 7 iron 150 yards and a driver 250 but the truth is only around 5-10% of club members can actually hit the ball this far. This is only one of our issues as this alone does not address slow play. We need to identify our slow players and hopefully educate them into playing at a faster rate or indeed playing golf in a more efficient way. That doesn’t mean better golf, it simply means; - Playing a provisional ball when needed - Taking their clubs to the correct side of the green for the next tee - Marking their scorecards whilst walking to their ball or when someone else is playing - Playing ready golf - i.e. playing your shot when you can and not in order of distance from hole - Keeping up with the game in front
This weekend I am going to ask you all to put down your start time and finish time on the cards and we are going to find out exactly where the problems are happening. We then are going to have to monitor certain groups or players to make this situation better. This is for everyone’s benefit especially the slow players. Taking 2.5 -3 hours to play 9 holes is absolutely ridiculous. Let’s all make it better!
