Greetings from Graeme Bell
East Kilbride Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Sun has been seen in the sky above East Kilbride this week, along with snow and hail but I think we a turning a corner. Whether it heads into a dead end, I have no idea but I have a feeling in my bones. As soon as we did see the sun, the car park was full again and there was definite buzz about the place.

COURSE CONDITION

I know that we had some issues with the fairways last year but what I have seen of the course so far looks very good. The amount of water that has been thrown at the course has been of biblical proportions and course has drained so well. I'm convinced that we must have some volcanic rock under the grass which is purifying the water as it goes through. Maybe we should try and locate a spring and sell it by the bottle. In all seriousness, we had two members who played one of our nearest competitors on Sunday and said it was like a bog. I can't name the course for legal reasons but it's good to know we are better. Sometimes it just takes a little visit to appreciate what you've got. On Friday 13th, we will see the course revert back to its summer order which will be nice as I will now be able to figure out who's on what hole. The greens staff will be doing some areation on the greens this week but this is completely necessary. Please CLICK HERE to read a little piece to help you understand why we do it.

ARE YOU TIRED OF OVER CURVING THE BALL TO THE RIGHT OR LEFT?

If you do suffer from over draws or slices, then the positioning of weight in the driver is crucial to you getting better. I would say that gaining twenty yards in a driver is a little bottle like the Holly Grail but reducing the curve by twenty yards is completely achievable.

The new TaylorMade R15 has twenty grams of moveable weight in the head and it can reduce the curve drastically. When you over curve the ball there is a massive difference between the orientation of the face and the path of the club at impact (assuming a centred strike). So all we need to do is to bring these more in line. The moveable weight allows us to do this and is pretty simple. Last year I fitted a chap called Ian Lambie (lovely guy from Linlithgow) (Hope you're reading this Ian) and he had some serious curve on the ball. We got him using a TaylorMade SLDR driver with 10 grams of moveable weight and positioned the weight to tame his slice. We also benefited from the club heads ability to produce lower spin. These two factors allowed Ian to stay on the right fairway and not have to start his ball so far left of his target. We quantified this using our Flightscope system as this allows me to justify an investment in a club.

MY HISTORY OF RADAR

Radar and other ball tracking systems are pretty common now but 7 years ago they were not. I was one of only a few professionals in Scotland to have made the significant investment in a Radar system. It was mainly only big resorts and brand fitting centres that had them. Why? Well they were very expensive and most people thought they could tell how a club and ball was performing just by looking at the ball. You can get an idea but you can't come anywhere close to giving players the right information or clubs. One of the main reasons I made the plunge into debt to buy the system was because I felt that I had to give people evidence as to why I would recommend a club or a swing change. People were paying me for my advice and this was the only way I could feel comfortable about doing so.

I was called mad and told that it was a fad or that I didn't have the skill to tell what the ball was doing. Bearing in mind I won Scottish Assistant of the Year in one year for my Studies and finished 6th in Britain for my final qualification, I knew that I was on the right track! Since then I have had 2 radar systems and have built up a great knowledge and reputation for what I do. I often get asked why I charge for fitting golf clubs, my answer is that I am good at it and you will always get honest an accurate information. Any radar or ball tracking system is only as accurate as the operator and I can assure you that 7 years of experience and 2 systems later, I am a very accurate operator.

DIAL IN YOUR WEDGES FOR THE START OF THE SEASON

Getting to know what your wedges do for you is of paramount importance and making sure that your wedges are helping you should be a priority for you. We have complete fitting solutions for the 2 leading wedge manufacturers, Cleveland & Titleist. We will check your current wedges, see what they do, if they are the right loft, lie, bounce etc. We will also see if they are producing the correct launch and spin. We can also compare them to the latest wedges on the market and see if they are better. We won't force sell you, we will just make you better!
