My headline last week said 'Taps Aff' and on Saturday the Lord in the skies had turned the TAPS ON. The only thing missing from the course on Saturday morning was some salmon leaping their way down the first fairway. July and we have to cancel a medal, I know it's happened in the past but it doesn't make it any easier to accept. I do think the seasons are shifting and at this rate we will be having a barbecue at Christmas.

THE PATIO

You've heard of the 'The Cube' well meet 'The Patio'. Both are looked after by silver haired chaps, one slightly younger and less tanned than the other. Both are also places where poise, skill and grace are required. I maybe should have worn a blacked out crash helmet to build this beast and I certainly could have done with the boiler suit to protect me from the bubbling molten cement mortar mix I made to hold by B&Q budgets slabs down. I can officially announce that even if we were situated on the San Andreas fault line and Godzilla rose from the Irish Sea, these slabs are not going to budge. Mission Completed.

Ok, the mission isn't strictly completed as I've not tidied up or put a border round it. My legs feel as if I have been leading the Tour De France and I have successfully covered my face in as much cement as the patio. I tip my hat to any man or women that lays patios for a living and firmly believe that spirit levels are the work of Satan and decking is the way forward!

THE GENTS TEAM WIN THEIR FINAL GAME OF THE SEASON AND SECURE 2ND DIVISION STATUS

The gents had their final game of the season at home against Colville Park Golf Club and soundly beat them. This secured their position in the 2nd division for next season. This season has been something to build on with some great wins for many new and established players. When I was an amateur player I used to play for Cathcart Castle in the Brand Putter League and nothing gave me more pleasure than to put on my team jersey and represent them come rain hail or shine. It has been really nice to see so many players especially the young guys look very much this way and guided by the more experienced team members.

Here's hoping that we can build on this year and establish ourselves as a 1st division team again.

LANARKSHIRE COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP AT EAST KILBRIDE GOLF CLUB

It is always an honour for a club to hold the County Championship and this Sunday 12th July we are holding this prestigious event. It brings together the best players from around the county and we have many players flying the flag for East Kilbride Golf Club. I always say to players I am coaching, "Go out and watch the best players at the club and you can learn so much about playing better golf". This is for free and it has helped me over the years become a better player. When I was very young I used to go and watch a 'The Parlane McFarlane' scratch competition at Cathcart Castle Golf. I used to be a ball spotter for players that had never played it before. It was great as a 10 year old to watch these guys strike the ball and hit it miles. I did this for years until I was good enough as a junior to wait on spec for a cancellation time on the day. I waited for 7 hours to get a tee time one year and it was worth it as I learnt so much from playing with the more experienced golfers. One of our members here 'Robert Barnes' has won this competition twice I am led to believe (Blame Kenny Gallagher if I'm wrong). So what am I getting at? Well, come up on Sunday and watch how these guys play your course and learn for free! What they do and how they play the course may unlock valuable secrets to help you.
