Pros news

It's been another week of tropical weather here at South Lanarkshire's Finest. Thursday is the day I look after my boys and on Thursday was an absolute scorcher when Clarkson hit the highs of 15 degrees! That meant only one thing - I opened the shed door, dusted the paddling pool and got the hose out! Paddling pool season had started.

After trying to connect the hose I realised that I have never ever had the correcting connecting piece and for 5 minutes I felt less of a man. Then I realised why saucepans had been invented. So after around 40 saucepans, I tried to place one 4 year old in the pool. This did not go too well as I had used the cold tap and one's child was now suffering from hypothermia. At this point I then discovered what the kettle was for and after 5 kettles, the pool was now at Tenerife temperatures. Logan was indeed a happy boy and I had 3 minutes peace!

Golf is stressful but combine it with paddling pools, cold water and screaming children, you do indeed have a carnival of fun!

Custom fitting

Another Fitting Success here at East Kilbride

I might as well just name this section 'The David McMorris Section'. David we all know has a fair bit of talent and knows the course better than most, but his results recently have been outstanding. I know I'm heaping a bit of pressure on him, but you may remember me saying 2 weeks ago he was due for more success after his recent custom fitting.

The reason I was so confident about this was because of how poorly fitted his last clubs were. This was not David's fault but more to do with the person who fitted him. Club fitting is offered by every single golf outlet but is very rarely performed to high standards. Why is this? Well, to be honest, it's not always being done by people who have the player's interests at heart. Sales and targets are the main focus of most of fitters. I think of my stock as a Golf Pro and Fitter improving in worth as I get people better, rather than making a sale for a club when it's not needed. This way everyone gains! Better golf is the main objective for any of the fittings I do, and there will be many of you reading this who have had a fitting and I have not sold you anything!

When you go for a fitting at a manufacturers fitting centre, you will always get told that you'll be getting 20 yards longer with your driver or you're hitting it straighter with you irons. This is just simply not possible for everyone. It is possible in some instances, but if every club was meant to do what it's meant to then we would be hitting it to the moon on a frozen piece of rope! And I can sensationally announce that we are not!

So David secured a gross 76 less 7 for a 69 and won the first class section. Well, done David! Your clubs are paying themselves back already!

If you are interested in having a fitting with us here in your pro shop, click here to get in touch or have a chat with a member of the team.

Notable results from my other students this week:

Stuart Houlden recorded the best scratch score of the day with a 74.
Philip Smith took second place in first class.
Jackson Kerr won 3rd class with a nett 67. It's also worth noting that Jackson bought an Orange Galvin Green Polo Shirt last week which obviously helped him along the way!

Hole in One

Congratulations to Tam Leith who bagged himself an ace this week!

Always great to hear these stories here in the pro shop, so well done Tam.

Shop news

Winter Shop Hours

The 1st of October was when we were meant to go to Winter opening hours, but we decided to hold out 2 weeks given the spell of good weather.

Our winter of hours of 9-dusk will now commence from the 12th October.

Why Are We All Going Lithium?

I have had a few customers in this week asking about new batteries for their golf trollies. I always recommend going lithium and not lead acid. Many of you may think that I am just trying to get you to buy the most expensive option, but I can assure you it is nothing to do with that. Here's why you should go lithium:

  • More reliable and last five times longer
  • Charges quicker
  • Much lighter (2.5kg against 7kg for a lead-acid one)
  • Half the size
  • More environmentally friendly

Lead acid batteries are not the same as they were. The amount of recycled lead that is going back into lead acid batteries is staggering and they are just not as powerful. I have worked with batteries for 15 years and I have never seen as many lead acid batteries failing within 1 year of purchase. In the good old days of quality lead acid batteries I saw lead acid batteries lasting for sometimes 10 years. Now you're lucky to get 10 months. We offer 2 lithium solutions that will fit every single trolley on the market.

- A 3 Year Unconditional Warranty Lithium Battery - £150 (Including Charger)
- A 5 Year Limited Warranty Lithium Battery - £190 (Including Charger)

Here are a few reasons why you should buy from me and not anywhere else!

  • I deal with any issue you have with anything you buy from me. At no point do you need to deal with the manufacturer..
  • We have a facility to test your battery at any point to give you an idea of its capacity. We do this FREE of charge.
  • If you ever have a problem with your battery, we will lend you one for FREE until we resolve any problem.
  • If you buy online then you have to get a suitable box for the transport of lithium batteries and you have to pay at least £15 to courier it back to the place of purchase.

Coaching news

Junior Winter Coaching

Our Winter Junior Coaching program will start again on Tuesday, 3 November and run for 6 weeks. This year we will be holding it at Mearns Castle Driving Range. There we will have access to the private corporate range bays from 5pm -7pm.

The 5-6pm class will be for the under 12's and the 6-7pm class will be for the over 12's. The range is not as close as Playsport, but I do feel that at this time 'Mearns Castle Driving range' provides us with the best facility..

This coaching is FREE to all Junior Members of East Kilbride Golf Club and all that they need to pay for is the balls they hit. This will cost £5

Due to the popularity of this program and the limited number of places, we will need you to register your interest straight away. It really is on a first come first serve basis so please click here to get in touch with the following details:

- Parent/Guardian Name, Email and contact number

Golf Care

Are you taking a risk?

Every time we hear someone say they don’t have golf insurance, we wince. The potential costs associated with injuring someone with a stray shot, for example, should be enough to make you think about taking out a policy. We can help find a suitable policy that covers you with our recommended insurance provider, Golf Care, here…
